Two Little Blocks. A Surprisingly Serious Workout.

I like my yoga blocks.

Two small objects that look as though they could not possibly ask very much of you.

That impression does not always survive the workout.

What I enjoy is how they let me change familiar exercises. A different position, a little support, a different starting point—and suddenly I have something new to pay attention to.

Depending on the exercise, blocks can bring the floor closer or change the position of the hands or feet. They can help make a movement more accessible, too.

I like having those possibilities.

I am very flexible, but flexibility is only one part of how I want to move. I also want strength, stability and control. I want to pay attention to what I am doing throughout the exercise, rather than simply arrive at the end of the repetitions.

The blocks give me another way to explore that, using a stable setup suited to the movement.

They have become something I genuinely enjoy including in my training. Simple, practical and surprisingly interesting once you start using them.

Of course, enjoying an exercise and finding the last repetitions entertaining are two different things.

The blocks remain completely untroubled by this distinction.
