A sofa without decorative cushions looks unfinished.
A sofa with decorative cushions is impossible to use.
Somewhere between these two facts, interior design lost control of the situation.
Decorative cushions are arranged beautifully.
Different sizes.
Different textures.
Colours that appear effortless but have clearly required several important decisions.
Then somebody actually wants to sit down.
This creates a problem nobody has ever solved elegantly.
Do you sit on them? Absolutely not.
Do you place them on the floor?
That feels disrespectful.
Do you hold one in your lap for the entire evening like a nervous emotional-support object?
Apparently, yes.
The cushion has successfully occupied the seat while you apologise for disturbing it.
Beds are even more complicated.
A beautifully made bed may contain enough decorative cushions to accommodate a small conference.
Every evening, they must be removed.
Not thrown.
Removed carefully and placed somewhere that immediately becomes unusable.
A chair.
A bench.
Possibly another room.
Then, every morning, they are returned to the bed in the correct order so that nobody can touch them again until night.
This is not decoration.
It is a daily administrative procedure.
And yet, I understand their power.
One cushion can change the entire mood of a room.
Add colour.
Create contrast.
Make an ordinary sofa look intentional.
Two cushions suggest taste.
Four suggest confidence.
Eight suggest that sitting was never part of the original plan.
They are essentially clothes for furniture.
Completely unnecessary.
Visually important.
And purchased with the same argument used for certain dresses:
It changes everything.
It does.
Mainly the amount of available space.
Perhaps that is why we continue buying them.
They make a home look finished, even when the people living in it are not.
They create instant order.
They imply calm.
They suggest that nobody has recently eaten something on the sofa while watching television.
A decorative cushion is not there to support your back.
It is there to support the credibility of the room.
Of course, eventually someone ignores the arrangement.
They sit down.
One cushion falls.
Another is moved.
The perfect composition collapses in seconds.
And suddenly the room looks alive.
Less impressive, perhaps.
But much more comfortable.
I still put the cushions back afterwards.
Naturally.
