About This Conversation

Control and adaptability are often treated as opposites.

I don’t see them that way.

In this conversation with Daniel Lucas on Abstract Essay, we explore why real control has very little to do with controlling circumstances, outcomes, other people, or what happens next.

The most useful form of control is internal.

Our reactions.

Our emotions.

Our values.

Our preparation.

Our way of working.

Our decisions.

And once that internal structure is strong, adaptability becomes possible.

Because being adaptable doesn’t mean changing your goal every time circumstances change.

It means being willing to change the way you get there.

Change the strategy, not the destination.

During our conversation, I use the world of horses as one of the clearest examples.

A horse is never exactly the same from one day to the next.

If I enter the stable determined to train exactly as I did yesterday, regardless of the horse standing in front of me today, I am no longer responding to reality.

I am simply following my plan.

Business and leadership are not so different.

Circumstances change.

Information changes.

People change.

Unexpected things happen.

The objective may remain the same, while the strategy required to reach it may need to change completely.

We also discuss decision-making with incomplete information, the role of mistakes as information rather than something to defend, and why the internal structure we build before difficult moments allows us to make decisions quickly when pressure arrives.

Because we cannot predict everything that will happen.

But we can build something reliable inside ourselves before it does.

Topics We Discuss

  • Control vs adaptability
  • Why control begins with ourselves
  • Changing strategy without changing direction
  • What horses can teach us about adapting in real time
  • Decision-making with incomplete information
  • Using mistakes as information
  • Building an internal structure you can rely on
