Podcast: Beyond the Mind with Tia

About This Conversation

Pressure has a way of making things visible.

Not only our strengths, but the way we think, decide, react, adapt, and take responsibility when circumstances stop being comfortable.

And that is exactly why I find pressure so interesting.

In this conversation on Beyond the Mind with Tia, we explore what happens when performance is no longer theoretical and decisions have to be made in real time.

We talk about leadership, resilience, mistakes, responsibility, adaptability, and one distinction that matters enormously to me: the difference between trying to control what happens around us and being able to remain in control of what happens within us.

Because we cannot control every circumstance.

We cannot guarantee an outcome.

We cannot know in advance exactly how another person, a market, a team, a competitor—or even a horse—will respond.

What we can build is the internal structure that allows us to respond effectively when those variables change.

And that is where adaptability becomes part of performance rather than the opposite of control.

You can keep the destination while changing the route.

You can remain consistent in your values while changing your strategy.

You can make a decision with the information available today and still be ready to adjust it when tomorrow gives you something new.

That is not inconsistency.

It is awareness.

We also explore mistakes and why I believe the most useful question after something goes wrong is not who is responsible for the blame, but what caused the mistake and what information we can take from it.

A mistake can become data.

It can show us something about our preparation, our assumptions, our strategy, or ourselves.

But only if we are willing to look at it.

The conversation moves between elite sport and business because, despite appearing to be very different environments, they repeatedly ask the same questions.

Can you stay focused when the situation changes?

Can you make a decision before you have every piece of information?

Can you adapt without losing your direction?

Can you accept an error, understand it, and continue without allowing it to define everything that follows?

And perhaps most importantly:

When pressure removes the comfort of the plan, what structure do you have left to rely on?

Because pressure does not need to create a different version of us.

Very often, it simply makes visible what was already there.
