Athlete mathematics is a highly specialised branch of knowledge that no university currently recognises.
This is surprising, because it contains several advanced concepts.
Ten repetitions, for example, are not ten identical units.
The first six are numbers.
The seventh is a concern.
The eighth requires a discussion.
The ninth lasts approximately three working days.
And the tenth is completed using a combination of technique, personal pride and facial expressions that should never be photographed.
Time also behaves differently during exercise.
Thirty seconds of rest lasts approximately four seconds when a coach is holding the stopwatch.
When the athlete is responsible for timing it, the same thirty seconds may extend naturally into several minutes, a drink of water and a brief examination of messages that could absolutely have waited.
This is not cheating.
It is athlete mathematics.
The phrase “one more” is another complicated calculation.
In normal language, one more means one.
In sport, it may mean one repetition, one set, one round, one kilometre or an entirely new exercise that the trainer has apparently just remembered.
“Almost finished” is even less precise.
It is not a measurement of time.
It is a message of emotional support.
There may still be twenty minutes remaining.
Nobody knows.
The important thing is that hope has been introduced into the situation.
Distance follows similar rules.
The first kilometre passes without incident.
The middle kilometres contain negotiations.
The final kilometre is divided into increasingly small geographical units:
Until the corner.
Until the tree.
Until the next lamp post.
Until that person in front of me, who has no idea that they have just been selected as part of my training strategy.
Athletes understand that ten kilometres can occasionally be too much.
But the next lamp post is usually possible.
Then the next one.
And somehow, through a series of mathematically questionable agreements, the entire distance is completed.
This is where athlete mathematics becomes more interesting than it first appears.
During physical effort, numbers stop being neutral.
Five minutes can feel insignificant before training begins and deeply personal near the end.
One kilogram can be almost nothing in everyday life and a complete betrayal when added to the final set.
A single second may appear irrelevant—until it separates your current result from your personal best.
The value of a number changes according to the effort attached to it.
This is why athletes become experts in breaking large demands into smaller ones.
Not necessarily because the body is incapable of completing the whole task.
Sometimes the mind simply refuses to negotiate with the entire distance at once.
Tell yourself there are forty difficult minutes remaining, and everything protests.
Ask for two more minutes, and an agreement may still be possible.
Then another two.
This is not self-deception.
The distance is real.
The work still has to be done.
But reducing the scale of the next commitment makes it mentally accessible.
The body moves through the whole session.
The mind often moves through one small promise at a time.
Of course, some calculations remain suspicious.
A personal best improved by one second is considered a historic achievement.
Arriving one minute late for training is described as “basically on time.”
A two-minute exercise is apparently far too long.
A two-hour conversation about equipment, shoes, technique or the correct type of protein is perfectly reasonable.
And calories consumed while standing in sportswear may occasionally be submitted for independent review.
But beneath all these questionable calculations is something athletes understand very well:
Progress is often too large to experience all at once.
It is built in repetitions, metres, seconds and tiny improvements that would appear almost meaningless individually.
One more controlled movement.
One more moment of concentration.
One small correction.
A fraction of time removed from the previous result.
From the outside, the numbers may look insignificant.
Inside the process, they are everything.
Athlete mathematics does not always follow the rules of conventional science.
It follows the changing relationship between effort and possibility.
It knows that five minutes can feel endless.
That one second can represent months of work.
That “one more” is not always a number—it is sometimes a direct threat.
And that an impossible distance can often be completed one lamp post at a time.
Sport does not make us bad at mathematics.
It simply teaches us that numbers remain neutral only until the body has an opinion.
