Some of the best things in my life arrived without an appointment.
They were not in the plan.
They offered no guarantees.
And they certainly did not wait until I felt completely ready.
They simply appeared.
Over time, we become very skilled at protecting ourselves. We learn to anticipate disappointment, recognize danger and imagine how something might end before allowing it to begin.
That can be wisdom.
But sometimes, without realizing it, protection becomes prevention.
We stop only what might hurt us at first. Then we begin stopping what might move us, surprise us or change us too.
Because a life built only to avoid pain eventually starts avoiding everything else.
Letting life surprise us does not mean becoming naïve. It does not mean ignoring experience, abandoning common sense or enthusiastically collecting red flags as though they were souvenirs.
It means understanding that not everything unknown is dangerous.
Some things are simply unknown because they have never happened to us before.
A new person.
An unexpected opportunity.
A spontaneous yes.
A day that suddenly refuses to follow the schedule.
We cannot ask every beautiful possibility to prove, in advance, that it will never disappoint us. Life does not issue certificates of emotional safety.
And perhaps it should not.
Because I do not want to move through life untouched.
I want to be awake enough to recognize what arrives, brave enough to experience it and intelligent enough to decide what deserves to stay.
I can protect myself without closing myself.
I can be careful without becoming unreachable.
I can know that something may not last and still allow it to be beautiful while it is here.
That is not weakness.
That is refusing to let an old wound make every new choice on my behalf.
So yes, make plans. Pay attention. Learn from experience.
But leave a little room for the unexpected.
Because every now and then, life has a better idea. ✨
