What Actually Happens in a Coaching Session?

There is a perfectly reasonable question to ask before contacting a coach.

“What would we actually do?”

If the answer is a collection of words such as growth, transformation and potential, you may still be wondering what happens when the call begins.

So let me make it more concrete.

You might arrive with a situation you cannot quite untangle. You have several professional options. An upcoming event is taking up a disproportionate amount of space in your head. You keep returning to the same question without getting anywhere useful.

We can begin there.

You do not need to arrive with an impressive goal. You do not need to make the situation sound more dramatic than it is.

For me, the work starts with understanding what you are describing, what matters to you and what you would like help examining. That can involve separating several concerns that have become bundled together.

Take an imaginary example.

“I want to be better at my job” could mean learning a skill, speaking about your work more clearly, reconsidering your workload or deciding what kind of work you want more of.

Those are different conversations. Establishing which one belongs to you is already useful.

From there, we can explore assumptions, options and the practical consequences of each. I can ask questions, offer observations and challenge a conclusion when the reasoning deserves another look. You remain the person making choices about your life.

A useful session might end with an action to try. It might also end with a clearer question, a distinction you had missed or information you now know you need.

I am interested in whether the work helps you engage with your actual situation. Feeling enthusiastic for an hour is pleasant; it is not the only way to judge the value of the conversation.

You are welcome to ask about my approach before deciding whether it suits you.

You do not have to know how coaching works before making an enquiry. Explaining that is part of my job.
