How do I choose my dresses for important occasions?
here you go ....
The dress looks spectacular.
Standing up.
Motionless.
Holding absolutely nothing.
An excellent start. Now I have a few practical questions.
Can I sit down? Can I walk at my normal speed? And if something falls on the floor, does it belong to the floor now?
I love clothes. I appreciate a beautiful cut, a daring neckline, the way a dress changes when you move.
Which is why I think the fitting-room test needs expanding.
We turn towards the mirror. We turn sideways. We look over one shoulder.
Lovely.
Now pull up a chair.
Because dinner will eventually involve sitting, and I would prefer to discover the engineering limitations before the waiter arrives.
Then there are the sleeves that want to taste your food. The neckline that requires a confidential check every few minutes. The skirt that gains several centimetres of ambition the moment you take a step.
Some outfits come with responsibilities nobody mentioned at the till.
And yes, occasionally something is so beautiful that I accept the terms.
I will negotiate with the fabric. I will choose the appropriate underwear. I will work out how to enter the car without giving the entire street a preview.
But I want to enjoy the evening once I get there.
Laugh properly. Move. Reach across the table.
So let me try the dress.
Then let me sit down.
If we can survive that first disagreement, we may have a future together.
