One Mistake Does Not Define Who You Are

About This Conversation

A mistake can change the result of a competition, affect an important decision, or challenge the confidence we have spent years building.

But should it change the way we see ourselves?

In this episode of REDEFINED Podcast, we explore the relationship between leadership, personal identity, self-trust, and the way we respond when things don’t go according to plan.

Drawing from my experience in international Grand Prix dressage and business, I discuss why even highly experienced people make mistakes, how to recognise warning signs before they become serious problems, and why accountability is essential to maintaining credibility.

The conversation also explores something I consider particularly important: the difference between accepting responsibility for an outcome and allowing that outcome to define our identity.

Topics We Discuss

  • Why a disappointing result should never become a personal identity.
  • How to recover from mistakes that everyone has witnessed.
  • Recognising small warning signs before they become major problems.
  • The relationship between accountability and self-trust.
  • Why experience does not eliminate uncertainty.
  • Maintaining credibility without pretending to be infallible.
  • Learning to respond rather than react.

My Thoughts

There is an enormous difference between saying “I made a mistake” and believing “I am a failure.”

The first is an observation. The second is a judgment about who we are.

And confusing the two can become far more damaging than the original mistake.

In sport, the result is immediately visible. You cannot negotiate with a scoreboard, and you cannot change what has already happened.

But you can decide what to do with that information.

The same applies to business, relationships, and everyday life.

I believe that self-trust is not built by constantly proving ourselves right. It develops when we know we can face an uncomfortable truth without losing our ability to act.

You are responsible for your decisions. You are not defined by every outcome.
