Life Is Happening While You’re Thinking About It...

About This Conversation

How much of our lives do we spend preparing for things that may never happen?

We imagine conversations, anticipate problems, calculate consequences, and sometimes become so occupied with what might happen tomorrow that we stop paying attention to what is happening today.

In this episode of Soul Sparks, I joined Swati for a conversation that moves beyond professional performance and into something we all experience: the difficulty of remaining present when our minds are constantly looking ahead.

Drawing from my experience in international equestrian sport, business, and everyday life, we explored how fear, uncertainty, expectations, and overthinking influence our decisions.

We also discussed why meaningful personal change rarely requires a dramatic transformation. Sometimes, it begins with recognising a familiar pattern and deciding to respond differently.

Topics We Discuss

  • Why overthinking can become an obstacle to action.
  • How fear influences decisions before anything has actually happened.
  • The difference between preparing for the future and becoming consumed by it.
  • Why mistakes should provide information rather than define our identity.
  • Building self-trust without constantly seeking external approval.
  • Why consistency matters more than temporary motivation.
  • Recognising opportunities in ordinary moments.
  • Learning to accept uncertainty without allowing it to dictate our choices.
  • Why small, intentional actions can create meaningful change.

My Thoughts

I have always believed that uncertainty is part of life. We cannot eliminate it, no matter how carefully we organise our plans.

But I also believe that we waste an extraordinary amount of energy trying.

We rehearse situations that haven’t happened. We worry about reactions we haven’t received. We postpone decisions while waiting for guarantees that nobody can give us.

And sometimes, in trying to avoid making the wrong decision, we end up making no decision at all.

But doing nothing is still a decision. And it has consequences too.

Years of competing at the highest levels of equestrian sport have taught me something very practical: you cannot respond effectively to what is happening if your attention is somewhere else.

A horse responds to what you do in that moment. Not to what you intended to do five minutes earlier, and certainly not to what you are worried might happen next.

Life is not so different.

Being present does not mean abandoning ambition, forgetting the future, or pretending that difficulties don’t exist.

It means giving the moment in front of you the attention it deserves.

Because the future will arrive regardless of how much time we spend worrying about it.

The question is how much of today we are willing to sacrifice while waiting for tomorrow.
