This Song Requires a Different Entrance

Some songs should come with a warning:

You are about to become considerably more dramatic.

A perfectly ordinary moment is happening. You are getting ready, walking somewhere, looking for something.

Then the opening notes arrive.

Suddenly, your posture changes. There is a little more intention in the way you move. The journey from the bedroom to the bathroom acquires choreography.

Nothing has changed, except that apparently you now have a soundtrack.

I love that about music.

A song can bring an unexpected amount of pleasure into a completely unremarkable part of the day. You recognise the introduction, turn it up and, for a few minutes, enjoy yourself without needing an occasion.

Sometimes you sing.

Sometimes you perform lyrics you have never properly understood with extraordinary confidence.

The language may be uncertain. The commitment is absolute.

And then there are the songs you cannot possibly interrupt halfway through.

You have arrived. You could get out. There are things to do.

But the chorus is coming.

Everything can wait another forty seconds.

If anyone asks, there was a delay.

They do not need to know that the delay had an excellent bass line.
